Sony Xperia 1 V rumored to bring new gen cameras based on “dual layer” tech

Rumors of the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 V have surfaced online. This flagship phone is stated to arrive with specs like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, 48MP ultrawide lens, and more. So let’s look at the rumors and speculations surrounding the Sony Xperia 1 V.

Sony Xperia 1 V Rumors:

Sony has only been launching one flagship phone per year—although the company did experiment with a “PRO” lineup as well in 2021. As the name suggests, the upcoming Xperia 1 V is the successor to last year’s Xperia 1 IV, which came with a 4K display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. And as per the rumors, Sony will likely follow the same pattern with top-of-the-line specs for the Xperia 1 V as well.

Design and Display

Tipsters OnLeaks and GreenSmartphones have already released render images for the Xperia 1 V. The phone will have a triple camera setup at the back, without  RGB or ToF sensors. A dedicated camera shutter button is still present though.

Up front, the Xperia 1 V will have a flat 6.5″ OLED display with a 21:9 aspect ratio like its predecessor. There is no solid information about the display’s resolution yet but with Sony’s past track records, the Xperia 1 V’s screen is likely to sport a 4K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Triple camera

As aforementioned, the upcoming flagship phone from Sony will feature a triple camera setup. The primary and the periscope telephoto unit will be a 12MP Sony sensor, whereas the ultrawide gets an upgrade from 12MP to 48MP. For selfies and video calls, we can expect a 12MP sensor up front.

The device will be equipped with a new image sensor from a totally new architecture. Instead of placing photodiodes and pixel transistors in the same substrate, this new “dual-layer” technology will place them in different layers and then stack them on top. This optimization will allow for a wider dynamic range with more details and higher contrast. Larger amp transistors can now make low-light photos less noisy and grainy. On a Hong Kong billboard, the phone is marketed as “The One for All Lights” meaning Sony’s Xperia 1 V will be able to capture great photos under all kinds of lighting conditions.

Other specs

Moving on, the upcoming Xperia 1 IV is said to pack the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. Likely with up to 16GB RAM. It could also retain a 3.5mm headphone jack and storage expansion via a microSD card. To note, Sony is one of the very few smartphone makers to still offer both of these features on its flagship phones. Moving on, leaks have pointed towards a 5000mAh battery with fast charging support here.
